Local Information

Gunnerton is a peaceful little hamlet in the North Tyne Valley set amidst beautiful countryside. The village offers an active community and village playing field that is well-maintained by the parish council. The nearby villages of Barrasford and Wark offer day to day amenities, including a Post Office, GP surgery, eateries, public houses and shops. In addition, Hexham and Newcastle are within easy reach and provide further retail, educational and professional services.

For schooling there are excellent First Schools in Barrasford and Beaufront, while senior schooling is offered in Hexham and Newcastle.

For the commuter the A68 and A69 provide excellent access to Newcastle in the east and Carlisle in the west, and onward access to the A1 and M6. The railway station at Hexham provides regular cross country services to both Newcastle and Carlisle, which in turn link to main line services to other major UK cities north and south. Newcastle International Airport is also within easy reach.


From the A69 take the A6079 (Cross Bank) signposted to Acomb. Follow this road for 3.2 miles travelling through Acomb and Wall and at the Brunton crossroads go straight across and continue for a further 1.3 miles to Chollerton. Take the left turn in Chollerton signposted to Barrasford and Wark and follow the road through Barrasford and after 1.5 miles take the right turn to Gunnerton. Continue along this road and Wayside Cottage can be found on the left-hand side, before the turning for Birtley.
